“Liquid Diet”

What is a clear liquid?
A good rule-of-thumb is anything you can see through. For example, apple juice is a clear liquid; milk is not. If unsure, check with the physician or registered dietitian.

Clear liquid diet:
A clear liquid diet consists of transparent liquid foods such as meat or vegetable broth, bouillon, clear fruit juices, clear fruit ices, popsicles, clear gelatin desserts, or clear carbonated drinks.

Full liquid diet:
A full or strained liquid diet consists of both clear and opaque liquid foods with a smooth consistency. It includes milk, milkshakes, ice cream, pudding, strained cream soups, fruit nectar with pulp, smooth cooked cereals such as oatmeal and cream of wheat, butter, and honey. In some cases, a full liquid diet may also include other foods that have been thinned and blended with liquids such as milk, meat or vegetable broth, or fruit or vegetable juice.

All fruit juices except those w/ pulp
Bouillon, broth
Butter/cream/oil/margarine
Carbonated beverages
Cheese soup
Coffee/Tea
Fresh or frozen plain yogurt
Fruit drinks
Fruit punch
Honey/jelly/syrup
Ice milk
Liquid meal replacements
Milk, all types
Milkshakes
Pasteurized eggnog
Plain cornstarch pudding
Plain gelatin desserts
Potatoes pureed in soup
Refined/strained cooked cereal
Small amounts of strained meat in broth or gelatin
Smooth ice cream
Soft or baked custard
Strained lemonade/limeade
Strained or blended soup
Thin fruit purees
Tomato juice
Tomato puree for cream soup
Vegetable juice
Water

Meal Plan: (This diet contains approximately 1000 calories, 1 g fat and 14 grams of protein)

Breakfast: Hot tea with lemon juice and 1 tsp sugar (no pulp); Apple juice (8 oz); Gelatin 1 cup

Lunch: Hot tea with lemon (no pulp) and sugar; Grape juice (8 oz); Fruit Ice (1 cup); broth (8 oz.)

Snack: Fruit juice (apple, cranberry or grape, 8 oz); Gelatin (1 cup)

Dinner: Hot tea with lemon and sugar; Apple juice (8 oz); broth (8 oz); Fruit Ice (1 cup)
