I’m building a house and am wiring for surround sound. I would like to place speakers in the walls and in the ceiling. How should the speaker wire be placed so I can add speakers after drywall is up and the speaker wire is hidden so it is easy to access and not impacted when they put up the drywall.
There are some rules to fallow when you are running low voltage inside walls or anywhere.
First you need to make sure that the line is not running parallel alongside any high voltage power (eg outlets, lights). I would put it on the mirrored side from the power. A little bit of paralleling is ok but don’t exceed 2ft.
Second if you are in an open space like an attic or drop ceiling the cable cannot lay on any lights and in a drop ceiling it cannot lay on the tiles.
If the walls are open you can use the proper staples found in the electric section of your home depot generally found near the low voltage supplies. However, you don’t necessarily need to use staples. You can use pretty much anything that will keep it away from the drywall install.
If you are using metal studs, which are common now, I would look for Tie Wrap mounts. They have a sticky back but I would get some small self tapping screw because the sticky foam doesn’t last long especially with temperature change, and handling abuse. You will also need plenty of zip ties. The sell the mounts at the Depot in the electrician section near the Zip Ties.
When using a box for a wall plate, make sure you use a low voltage type. There are several types to choose from. If the walls are open you can get one that mounts to the stud, but a cheaper and easier option is using a Charlton. They are orange and are also sold at the depot. These are nice because you don’t need a stud to mount it to so you can place it pretty much anywhere just as long as the latches can swivel and catch the drywall.
Make sure that you pull enough cable! I always pull 6-12 feet more than what I think i’ll need on each end. Because things change and it is always better to look at it than for it. Also you can stuff the excess back in the hole, as long as the insulation allows it.
At the speaker end I would suggest to leave enough cable loosely coiled above the speaker so that it can be taken down and rest on the top of a ladder. Plus it is always easier to terminate the speaker the closer to the ground it is. This also allows for servicing later.

Suppose that the separation between two speakers A and B is 3.90 m and the speakers are vibrating in-phase. They are playing identical 148-Hz tones and the speed of sound is 343 m/s. An observer is seated at a position directly facing speaker B in such a way that his line of sight extending to B is perpendicular to the imaginary line between A and B. What is the largest possible distance between speaker B and the observer, such that he observes destructive interference?
i need math. not coments about how it cannot be done.
For destructive interference the distance from the two speaker must differ by ?/2; 3?/2…etc
Now for a frequency of 148hz the wavelength is 343/148 = 2.318m
Now the distance to speaker B is x and the distance to A would be sqrt(x^2 + 3.5^2)
so sqrt(x^2 + 3.5^2) – x = 2.318/2 = 1.159
so x^2 + 3.5^2 = (x + 1.159)^2….so x^2 + 3.5^2 = x^2 + 2*1.159x+ 1.159^2
simplifying 3.5^2 = 2.318x + 1.343
So x = (12.25 – 1.343)/2.318 = 4.71m

Can car speaker drivres be used to design and build home speaker systems with good results? What’s the sonic difference between them?
well car speakers sound a whole lot better simply because they have less air to move inside your car, then say your living room.i think you should be able to use car speakers in your home theater its that youll need to have a speakerbox and match the impendance or else its no use to have one in your house.but you can design them to be used at home.it should sound the same if not better…as i said before your car has a lot less air then your living room causing the subwoofer to sound amazing in your car…and sometimes crappy in your living room.
I have a 2 front speakers and 2 rear speakers connected to my amplifier. I have a TV on one wall and sometimes have a projector on the next wall round in the room (90deg to the TV). I would like to have a switch box that moves the speaker output round the room by 90deg. Does anyone know if these type of switch boxes are available?
This question has been asked here before.
This would not be easy or cheap and probably is not worth the effort. You would need to have some sort of elaborate set up relays to connect one speaker and disconnect the other speaker while at the same time connecting the correct speaker to the correct channel on your receiver. I get a headache just thinking about it.
The easiest thing is to is to set up your amp or receiver so that the sound is good in the room no matter where you sit or what direction you are facing..

The right door panel speaker is messed up so Im replacing both door panel speakers. Which aftermarket speakers would be good to buy? Im not looking for anything spectacular, but I do want something that will sound good. I would say im willing to spend no more than $50 for the pair. The head unit is stock just to let you know, not planning on getting rid of it.
i would say go to as many audio stores as you can and look/listen to and see what you think sounds good to you. that is the only way to do it. never let some one tell you what to get.
good luck
