Tennis Racquet Stringing 4: Stringing The Mains

Posted by admin on May 19th, 2010 and filed under tennis racket | 25 Comments »

This shows how to start and finish stringing mains strings on a tennis racquet using a two-piece stringing method on a Gamma X-2 Stringer – a two-point floating clamp drop-weight machine.
This is my first attempt at making a video guide so do give your comments so that I can make a better revision. =)

@almerickso ahhhh, now i get it. i was wondering the same thing. do you always get a tension loss when you tie your strings off? that doesnt sound very accurate.

is the gamma x-2 a good machine?

    My only comment …
My only comment with this is that the racquet is not mounted centered. The two mounting posts should be as close to equal distance from the center post. That way you are tensioning equally from the center of the racquet face. The way it is set up right now, about 6 inches less string is pulled when tensioning from the head side of the racquet.

Those clamps suck! Get a fixed clamp! This guy prob take 2 hour to string.

    The skips differ …
The skips differ for each racket. You can normally tell by looking closely at the grommets to see where the first and second cross strings are, and those are the ones you would skip. And then you would get to the last grommets for the main strings, so you would pull tension, clamp and tie em’ off and you’re done with the mains.

It sounds harder than it is. lol. It’s just one of those things you have to do yourself to get the hang of it, and so that it starts making since.

    You can only clamp …
You can only clamp 2 strings with X2’s floating clamps. You cannot clamp one string since it attaches to 2 strings instead of one (I destroyed my string just right now with the double-pull method :-/).

If you want to clamp one string at a time, find a better stringer or better floating clamps.

    Can anyone clear up …
Can anyone clear up this question: Look at the application of the clamp at 4:13. Is he clamping one string at a time or two? I saw in the Silent Partner website, there is a video of the guy clamping two strings at a time all the way through on the mains and crosses. I’m about to get a Gamma X2 for Father’s Day and to me it would seem that clamping one string at a time makes better sense mechanically, (it wouldn’t make a “stretchy triangle at the frame”). Thanks for clearing this up!

    I use the …
I use the klippermate one, it works just fine and it’s really cheap, it works fine too, but the thing I like about the X-2 is that it has that ratchet system making it a little bit easier to string, although I don’t know how accurate the X-2 is, klipper is fairly accurate though

  14. layziaznboi Says:

    it does take a …
it does take a while longer, but as long as you’re careful and don’t rush it, it’s pretty accurate, not as accurate as automatic of course, but it’s still good enough. And I do prefer using drop weight over manual for some reason. It takes me about 45-50 min to string a racquet, a bit longer for O3 and speedport using the klippermate

Drop weight seems inaccurate and would take forever to do. Am I wrong?

  19. JMUDoc Says:

    Since you would …
Since you would always clamp the string as close to the frame as possible, the flattened string isn’t ever going to come into contact with the ball, so there will be no problem ;)

wouldnt the strings be screwed up ? if ur like clamping on that hard onto the strings . like wouldnt the hexagonal profile be like a flat string ?

  24. davisracquet Says:

    The thing that …
The thing that scares me about one piece stringing is how half the mains are pulling on one side of an expensive racquet. I was told just today as a matter of fact, I spoke with a professional stringer and his words to me “Don’t worry about it, stick with two piece stringing, I don’t like the mains looking like that either”. I guess as you say, if I don’t have one of the racquets that are one piece recommended, I’m doing ok.

  25. RubyM125 Says:

    yes some racquets …
yes some racquets are recommended to have one piece stringing. i still use two piece because i do hybrids on my racquet. when i’m using the same string i just use one piece unless i have to do around the world
